Ortom cancels ‘last minute’ recruitments by ex-gov Suswam

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, has cancelled all the last minute recruitment into the state civil service as well as the appointment of six first class chiefs by his predecessor, Gabriel Suswam.
He also approved the dissolution of the 23 local government Caretaker Committees in the state with immediate effect.
Ortom who spoke in Makurdi, after a closed door meeting with heads of government agencies and parastatals, attributed the action to the poor financial situation in the state.
He said the reversals became necessary in view of the back log of unpaid salaries and allowances as well as retirement benefits coupled with the empty treasury he met on assumption of office.
He directed the chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Comfort Agogo, to furnish him with the details of the employment status of former staff redeployed from the Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS to the various ministries.
On the sacking of chiefs, Ortom stated that “any person or group of persons parading themselves as first Class Chiefs in the Tiv Area Traditional Council are by this announcement urged to comply,” adding that further action would not be taken on the matter until the determination of the substantive motion before the High Court on the issue.
Ortom, therefore, directed the Tiv Area Traditional Council headed by the Tor Tiv, Dr. Alfred Torkura to suspend forthwith the process of the conferment of the first class chiefs, maintaining that the order granted by Justice Iorhemen Hwande should be obeyed.
